HONORING THE STORY IN EVERY PIECE
At Found & Fixed, we believe furniture has two stories to tell: the story of the people who used it and the story of the wood itself.
We don't treat furniture like museum artifacts. We know it’s where you eat dinner, host parties, do homework, and unwind after a long day. Whether you want to save your grandmother’s rocking chair or you just found a cool beat-up dresser at a yard sale, our goal is the same: to make your furniture solid, beautiful, and ready to be enjoyed for years to come.
We are here to make your vision happen, but we also believe in being honest about what is physically possible with your piece. To us, understanding wood means knowing the technical realities of our trade—understanding what works, what doesn't, and leaning into the strengths of the wood in your piece rather than fighting them.
Sometimes, we have to look beyond what a piece was to see what it could be. In our work, we come across a lot of furniture on its way to the landfill and, as much as possible, we try to rescue the furniture or, if the furniture isn’t reusable, salvage any high-quality wood and hardware we can to reuse in our furniture projects.
We view restoration as bringing a piece towards its original state, not necessarily returning it to the “true” original state. "Sympathetic” restoration lies in the sweet spot in the middle. It allows us to clean up the damage that distracts (water rings, peeling varnish) while respecting some of the historical character and wear (i.e. evidence of a well-loved piece) whether it’s a rich patina, some small dents in soft pine, or old scribbles drawn inside a drawer.
Repairs are the essential foundation of everything we do. Before anything, furniture must be functional. We focus on restoring the structural integrity of the piece—fixing the wobble, un-sticking the drawer, or stabilizing the leg—to help ensure you can continue to use your furniture for years to come. For some projects, like a family heirloom dining room chair that just needs to work again, repair may be the only service required.
To us, sustainability isn't just about saving wood; it's about the air we breathe. Traditional refinishing often involves a lot of harsh chemicals, so we make a conscious choice to use less caustic, non-toxic products whenever possible. From environmentally friendly strippers (like Green EZ) to water-based polyurethanes and low-VOC paints (like Melange Paints), we want our shop to be a safe place to work and your furniture to be safe to bring back into your living space.
While a pristine finish is always the goal, the condition of a piece or budget realities sometimes call for creative solutions. We work closely with clients to find stylish, practical approaches that breathe new life into furniture— whether that means adjusting stain colors to mask unwanted tones, using fills to conceal veneer chips or cracks, or applying paint or dark stain to salvage heavily damaged surfaces.
