Job Title: Operations Manager

About This Role
We’re a small, values-driven furniture workshop and worker-owned cooperative based in Highland, NY. We specialize in upcycling, restoring, and transforming furniture with care and creativity. Our team collaborates on everything from shop work to business decisions, and we’re proud of the supportive and collaborative environment we’ve built.
We’re looking for an Operations Manager to help our team stay organized, connected, and supported as we grow. This role is part project manager, part systems-builder, and part team facilitator. You’ll be helping to guide the flow of production, coordinate priorities across the shop, and contribute to the cooperative’s overall operational health. We’re especially looking for someone who brings strong communication skills and a collaborative, people-first approach to team leadership.
As a worker-owned cooperative, we are seeking someone who is interested in becoming a future co-owner of our business. While you don’t have to fit this criteria to join our team, we will give preference to applicants who are passionate about becoming a future co-owner of our business.
The person who joins in this role will first and foremost take on management of shop operations. From there we will on-board you to other organizational responsibilities, including finances and invoicing.
What You’ll Do
Production & Workflow Coordination
Help set up and manage project timelines, goals, and weekly work plans
Track tasks, team capacity, and progress across multiple projects
Keep our production tracking systems (Google Sheets, Slack Canvas, etc.) up to date
Communicate daily and weekly priorities clearly to the team
Coordinate scheduling and logistics with clients
Operational Oversight
Maintain shared documents and systems to help the business run smoothly
Lead or support weekly planning and review meetings
Track hours worked vs. hours needed to support project flow and business sustainability
Support ongoing improvements to our internal systems as we grow
Co-op & Team Support
Help facilitate shared decision-making and keep communication flowing
Collaborate with team members to build consensus around priorities and policies
Support onboarding and transitions into co-op membership for new team members
Contribute to shaping our goals, values, and accountability practices as a collective
Pitch in with creative problem-solving and help the team navigate roadblocks
What We're Looking For
Strong organizational and time management skills
Experience managing workflow or operations in a small business or creative setting
Confidence with Google Sheets and other collaborative tools (Slack, Google Docs, etc.)
A team-oriented mindset—you value input, build trust, and keep people aligned
Ability to set clear goals, communicate evolving priorities, and adjust plans as needed
A genuine interest in cooperative business models and shared leadership
Experience with facilitation, team planning, or collaborative decision-making
Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a studio or workshop setting
An interest in woodworking, repair, and finishing is essential
While prior woodworking or finishing experience is not a requirement, a willingness to learn and develop these skills is necessary to effectively support shop operations
Daily participation in hands-on shop work is required

Job Overview: As a part-time shop assistant, you will support our shop team with a variety of entry-level tasks. This role is perfect for someone eager to learn the basics of woodworking and furniture restoration while contributing to the smooth operation of our shop. You will be responsible for maintaining a clean and organized workspace, assisting with minor furniture repairs, and supporting deliveries.
Key Responsibilities:
Shop Maintenance: Keep the woodshop clean and organized by sweeping, dusting, and disposing materials.
Hardware Removal and Cleaning: Safely remove hardware from furniture and clean it for reuse
Furniture Cleaning: Clean furniture pieces, including dusting, wiping, and preparing them for repair or finish
Minor Repairs: Assist with basic furniture repairs, such as tightening screws, gluing joints, or replacing parts
Painting and Touch-Ups: Apply paint, stains, or finishes to furniture pieces.
Sanding: Machine and hand sanding are daily activities.
Support Deliveries: Assist with loading, unloading, and delivering furniture to clients or storage locations.
Assisting Team Members: Provide general support to woodworkers and other team members as needed.
More skilled work and responsibilities depending on prior experience
Schedule:
We’re flexible with our shop assistants’ schedules, but what we most need is reliability. For interesting candidates, we’ll want to hear from you about what schedule you think you can keep and then we’ll agree to that. We are currently looking for help on:
Saturday afternoons from 11am - 4pm
Monday and Wednesday nights from 7 - 10pm
Any weekdays from 9am - 5pm
Qualifications:
A strong interest in woodworking and furniture restoration
Candidates with experience in a studio or workshop setting, as well as those with skills in woodworking, repair, or refinishing, will be given strong preference.
Willingness to learn and take direction from experienced team members
Basic knowledge of tools and hardware is a plus
Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting and moving heavy objects
Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining a clean and safe workspace
Reliability and punctuality
Good communication skills and a positive attitude
